Leonid Pasternak, a painter and graphic artist, was born to a Jewish family in Odessa. He studied in an Odessa drawing school, then at the University of Moscow and the Academy of Art in Munich. In 1905, he became a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Art. He moved to Berlin in 1921. In 1924 he visited Palestine, where he made drawings and watercolors of the countryside. The advent of the Nazi regime caused him to leave Berlin, and he moved to London, where he was to live for the rest of his life. He painted mostly portraits, and among his sitters were Leo Tolstoy and Albert Einstein.
